the same language with your certification.
AFERM is now offering

NIST Releases Draft Privacy Framework: The agency has just released an initial public draft of Version 1.1 of the Privacy Framework: A Tool for Improving Privacy Through Enterprise Risk Management. The document is designed to provide a useful set of privacy protection strategies for agencies to help improve their approach to using and protecting personal data. The publication also provides clarification about privacy risk management concepts and the relationship between the Privacy Framework and NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework. The NIST Privacy Framework is not a law or regulation, but rather, a voluntary tool that can help organizations manage privacy risk arising from their products and services, as well as manage compliance with applicable privacy laws. NIST is soliciting feedback on the draft until June 13, 2025. You can find more information here.

Bill to Foster Public/Private Relationships for NIST: A bill was recently introduced to the House and Senate to foster public-private partnerships for NIST. This bill would help to create a Foundation for Standards and Metrology at the Department of Commerce, which would be focused on fostering collaborations with academia, industry, and other organizations, to ensure that industry, non-profits, and academia receive the resources that they need to establish cutting-edge standards that enhances the economic security and prosperity of the U.S. As the federal government continues to restructure itself under the current administration, this bill will help to ensure continued support for the work done by NIST through public-private partnerships and leverage the agency’s leadership and expertise in the development of standards and frameworks. FedRAMP Overhaul Could Usher in US Government’s AI Age: The FedRAMP program was originally developed in 2011 to provide a pathway for cloud service providers to obtain authorizations to provide cloud services to government agencies. Once a service receives FedRAMP authorization, the technology is available for other government agencies to purchase. While the program is considered to be a success in terms of reducing duplication of effort for the individual agencies to obtain authorizations for onboarding cloud solutions, the authorization process itself is seen as cumbersome and time consuming. With this in mind, the current set of FedRAMP overhaul focuses on creating more efficiency through automation, and enabling cloud service providers to be more autonomous and self-sufficient to submit authorizations for their services. This is likely to significantly increase the efficiency and speed through which cloud solutions, and in particular, AI solutions, can obtain authorizations to be available in the FedRAMP marketplace. Thus, that once the FedRAMP authorization process is streamlined, it is expected to greatly improve adoption and accessibility of AI solutions, which could usher in the Federal Government’s AI space. You can find more information here.

The Case for Enterprise Risk Management in Higher Education: Higher education is not immune from the same kind of risks that impact industry and as we’ve seen in 2024 continues to be buffeted by a wide range of risks including political, reputation, financial and operational, among others. The practice of enterprise risk management (ERM) in higher education is uneven across institutions and trails behind more evolved ERM programs in the private sector such as banking and pharma. Elevating ERM within the organization to a prominent leadership role is guaranteed to pay dividends over time and avoid debilitating risk events that detract from the business of education. This article, published by the University of Maryland lays down the case for why colleges and universities need an ERM program. You can find the article here.
