AFERM’s Tom Brandt’s conversation with Clive Martin, the UK’s first “head of the government risk profession” — a position created in 2022 to address issues identified in a COVID-19 review that pointed to a need for better risk planning and intelligence sharing. We chatted with Mr. Martin about various aspects of the charge he was given in this new role, which includes reporting on the progress government departments are making on risk management effectiveness, pulling together information on risks the government faces so that it can be considered more holistically, and determining an accreditation regime for the UK government’s risk management professionals.

CFO Council Playbook - Enterprise Risk Management

The Chief Financial Officers Council (CFOC) and the Performance Improvement Council (PIC) have released the updated Playbook: Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) for the U.S. Federal Government. The Playbook is the result of an interagency effort convened by the Office of Executive Councils under the leadership of the Chief Financial Officer Council. Originally released in 2016, the updated Playbook provides guidance and updates to Integrating ERM with strategic planning, performance, budgeting, and internal controls, Risk Appetite and Tolerance, ERM and Cybersecurity, as well as updates to appendices related to workforce characteristics, and maturity model.
