The Future of ERM Starts This Week

Colleagues,

This week, we come together for the 2025 AFERM Virtual Summit. If you haven’t already, sign up so you don’t miss out!

👉AFERM 2026 Virtual ERM Summit

Over the past month, I have shared updates about our strategic direction, our decision to join forces with AGA, and our plans for continued growth. Now, we put that momentum into action.

Sam Twyman

During the Summit, we will:

  • Discuss ERM trends shaping government
  • Share insights from our GMU survey
  • Recognize leaders in the profession
  • Outline our next chapter as we join forces with AGA

This is more than an event. It is a marker in AFERM’s evolution. The decisions that brought us here were thoughtful, deliberate, and grounded in ERM principles. Now it is time to execute.

I encourage you to participate actively, ask questions, and engage in the survey discussions. ERM in government continues to mature. Our role is to help lead that progress.

Before we begin this next chapter, I want to share a message from AGA’s leadership welcoming AFERM members into their community.  See message below.

See you at the AFERM Summit this week.

AFERM members,

A little over 20 years ago, leaders from AGA’s National office met with a group of federal financial management government leaders to help create a new organization — the Association for Federal Enterprise Risk Management. AFERM was born as a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and adoption of enterprise risk management in the federal government.

Fast forward to 2026, ERM adoption is widespread across the federal government and is gaining traction in state and local government entities. AFERM members have developed intellectual capital consisting of guidance and tools covering governance, risk appetite and maturity models — available for all to leverage. Today AFERM’s membership has grown, and its impact has been significant.

AFERM’s volunteer leadership recognizes that sustaining a nonprofit — including managing operations, growing membership, creating thought leadership, and organizing educational programming — requires full-time infrastructure and support.

As a result, AFERM is being welcomed into the AGA community.

AGA brings more than 75 years of experience supporting government professionals with educational opportunities, professional development, and a robust member network across federal, state, local and private sector communities. This transition will expand opportunities for AFERM members while continuing the advancement of ERM practices.

Together, we will broaden the reach and impact of the ERM community, providing additional resources, programming, and networking opportunities on an elevated platform. Over the next few months, AGA and AFERM leadership will be working together to complete this transition. We will keep you apprised of our progress as we go.

We are excited for you to join the AGA family!
